Grading Australian Florins

So how would you grade this coin ?

It’s a cracker, isn’t it – I can’t remember seeing too many with such different sides…. hard to believe it’s the same coin!

Although it’s a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde, Ugly Duckling kind of coin – not a rarity or anything like that, I couldn’t sell it because this is the coin that kicked off my Aussie florin collection.

But if it had to be graded, you’d have to give a value for each side (“split” grading).

The reverse (tails’ side) wouldn’t be too hard if you compare it to coins that have been graded, like these florins here.

As for the obverse (head’s side) – what can you say…..? I mean, under all that dark stuff is there a coin in top notch condition ?

I think that’s what they mean when they say “great patina” – still for this coin it really is that patina that makes it for me!
